An injury is generally sustained, when a person falls on his hands in such a way that the wrist bends backward. This causes compression on the cartilage. Degenerative changes in the TFCC structure are more rapid and severe as we get older, commonly in people above 50 years of age. Due to age, the soft tissue structures become thinner, making the TFCC vulnerable to tear even with trivial force or minutest trauma.
