Guillain-Barré syndrome is an acute, inflammatory, post-infectious autoimmune disease of the nervous system characterized by demyelination of the peripheral and autonomic nerves resulting in acute muscle weakness and loss of sensations. The demyelination of peripheral nerve axons produces symmetrical motor paralysis, which progressively ascends from the lower extremities.
